Driving with kids and pets: safety and comfort
Children and pets turn an ordinary drive into a small logistics task. They also change what can go wrong. A loose bag is a nuisance, but a loose child, dog or heavy object in a sudden stop is a danger to everyone in the car. This guide covers safe seating, restraint, breaks and calm, in plain terms. Rules for child seats and animals differ by country, so check with the competent authority for the exact requirements where you drive.
The basic principle: everyone and everything is restrained
In a sudden stop, anything in the car keeps moving forward at the speed the car was going. That includes people, animals and objects. Restraint means every person is held by a seat belt or an approved child seat, and every animal and heavy item is secured so it cannot become a projectile. Think of the cabin as a place where nothing should be loose.
Children
Children need a seat that fits their size and age, and that fits your car. A seat that is installed wrongly gives much less protection than one installed properly. Read the instructions, check that the belt path is correct and that the seat does not move more than a little at the base. Our guide to child seat basics explains types and fitting in more detail.
- Use a seat suited to the child's size, not only age, and change it when the child outgrows it.
- Keep children in the back seat unless the rules and the seat allow otherwise.
- Never let a child ride in a lap, and never put a belt behind the back or under an arm.
- Check airbag rules for the front seat. A rear-facing seat must not be used in front of an active airbag.
- Do not leave a child alone in a parked car, even for a moment. Temperatures inside rise quickly.
Making the trip easier for kids
A calm child makes a safer driver. Plan trips around nap times where you can. Bring water, snacks that are easy to eat and not messy, and a few toys or audio stories. Use sun shades on the side windows to keep the sun out of their eyes. Stop more often than you would alone, and let them move around at each stop. If a child gets travel sick, sitting upright with a view of the horizon, fresh air and a small, light meal before the trip can help.
Dogs and cats
Animals should be restrained too. For dogs, a harness attached to the seat belt system, a secured crate or a dog guard behind the rear seats are common solutions. Choose a product made for cars and sized for your pet. For cats and small animals, a secure carrier is best, fastened in place so it cannot slide. Do not let an animal sit on the driver's lap or move freely around the cabin, because it can distract you or get in the way of the pedals.
Avoid putting a carrier in front of an active airbag, and do not keep animals in the boot area unless it is separated from the cabin and ventilated. Check the rules where you travel, since the details differ by country.
Heat and ventilation
Animals cannot cool themselves as easily as people do. Never leave a pet in a parked car in warm weather, even with the windows slightly open. A car heats up fast in sun. Plan trips in hot months for early morning or evening, carry water and a bowl, and use the air conditioning properly. See summer heat checklist.
Breaks
Take a break at least every couple of hours. Let the dog walk and drink. Let children stretch. Always use a lead or keep control of a pet at a service area, because they can bolt in an unfamiliar place. Never open doors on a busy road side with animals loose in the car.
Keep the cabin tidy and safe
- Secure bags, laptops, bottles and toys, either in the boot or under a cover.
- Keep heavy items low and behind a barrier or net if they could fall forward.
- Avoid hard toys within a child's reach that could fly in a stop.
- Have wipes, bags and a towel for accidents.
Longer trips
For longer journeys, read road trip preparation and keep the emergency kit within reach. Think about what you will do if the car breaks down on a hot or cold day with children or animals aboard; see breakdown: what to do.
What to remember
- Everyone and everything in the car is restrained.
- The child seat must fit the child, the car and be installed correctly.
- Never leave children or pets alone in a parked car.
- Use a harness, crate or barrier for animals.
- Plan breaks, water and calm into the trip.
