How to use the market prices

Our market pages show what sellers ask for used cars of a given make, model and generation. They are a good starting point for a price conversation, as long as you read them for what they are. This guide shows how to use them when you buy and when you sell.

What the numbers are

Every figure comes from the asking price in public online ads. The price a car is finally sold for is usually lower, and we do not know it. Read the numbers as “what sellers ask”, not “what buyers pay”. We never show single ads, only aggregates.

The three things to look at

  • The median is the middle price: half of the ads ask less, half ask more. It is not distorted by a few very cheap or very expensive ads.
  • The range (25th to 75th percentile) is where the middle half of all ads sit. A price inside it is normal for the market; a price far outside it needs an explanation.
  • The reliability label tells you how much to trust the figure. We publish nothing below a minimum sample. With low reliability, treat the figure as a rough hint.

Compare like with like

A price range is only useful for a car that matches it. Before you compare, match these:

  • Generation and year: a facelift can change the price noticeably.
  • Engine and fuel: diesel, petrol and hybrid versions of one model can sit far apart.
  • Mileage: more kilometres usually means a lower price. Compare your car with the ads that have a similar mileage.
  • Condition, equipment and service history: the ads do not describe these fully, so adjust for them yourself.
  • Country: prices differ between Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.

When you buy

  1. Find the make, model and generation of the car you are considering.
  2. Look at the range, not only the median.
  3. If the ask is below the range, find out why (damage, high mileage, missing papers, a rushed seller). Do not assume it is a bargain.
  4. If the ask is above the range, ask what justifies it (low mileage, full service history, rare equipment). If nothing does, use the range to negotiate.
  5. Keep in mind that the final price is usually lower than the ask.

When you sell

Use the range to decide where your asking price should sit, then adjust for your car's mileage, condition and papers. The guide on valuing your car for sale walks through this step by step.

What the numbers cannot tell you

  • They are not a valuation of one particular car and not an offer.
  • Not all cars are advertised online, and some ads contain mistakes. We filter obvious errors but cannot catch all of them.
  • One car can be advertised more than once, so counts are counts of ads, not of cars.

How the figures are made is explained on the methodology page of the market statistics.
