Electric cars in winter: keeping your range
If you have driven an electric car through a cold season, you have probably noticed that range shrinks. That is normal and not a sign of a faulty car. With the right habits, you can reduce the loss and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Why cold reduces range
- Battery chemistry: a cold battery cannot deliver or accept energy as freely as a warm one, so some of its capacity is temporarily unavailable.
- Heating: a petrol engine produces waste heat for the cabin for free. An electric car has to make heat from the battery, using a heater or a heat pump.
- Denser air and wet roads: cold air and slush create more resistance.
- Tyres: pressure falls in the cold, and winter tyres usually roll with a little more resistance.
- Short trips: the car spends a larger share of the trip warming itself up.
The effect depends on the car, the temperature and how you drive, so expect a noticeable drop and learn your own car's winter numbers rather than relying on a general figure.
Before you leave
- Pre-condition while plugged in. Most cars let you warm the cabin and battery from your phone or a timer. Doing it while connected to the charger uses mains power instead of the battery.
- Park sheltered. A garage or a spot out of the wind helps the battery keep some warmth.
- Start with enough charge. Leave extra margin on winter trips and do not plan to arrive with almost nothing left.
- Check tyre pressure. It drops with the temperature. See tyre pressure and rotation.
- Clear snow and ice from the roof, lights and sensors.
On the road
- Use heated seats and a heated steering wheel, if fitted, instead of blowing hot air at full power. They warm you with less energy.
- Set a moderate cabin temperature and use recirculation briefly, but keep the windows from misting.
- Drive a little slower. Speed has a large effect on energy use, and more so on cold, wet roads.
- Use regenerative braking, but note that on a cold battery regeneration may be limited at first, so be ready to brake normally.
- Keep safety first: do not trade comfort or visibility for a few extra kilometres. See winter driving tips.
Charging in winter
A cold battery charges more slowly, especially on fast chargers. If your car has pre-conditioning for fast charging, use it when you navigate to a charger, so you arrive warm and charge faster. Expect to stop more often and for longer on winter trips. Plan stops and keep a backup, as in charging explained. Our trip cost calculator can help you estimate winter journey costs when you adjust for higher consumption.
Parking for long periods
If you leave the car outside in deep cold for days, expect some loss of charge. Try not to leave it nearly empty, and do not leave it unplugged for weeks with a very low battery. Check your manual for storage advice.
The 12-volt battery
Electric cars also have a small ordinary battery for the electronics. It can weaken in the cold like any other, and a flat 12-volt battery can stop a car from starting even with a full main battery. See 12-volt battery care. Do not try to jump-start high-voltage parts; follow your manual, and see a workshop if needed.
Winter tyres and the rest of the car
Good winter tyres improve safety more than almost anything else, even if they cost a little range. Read tyre basics and winter prep for the full routine. If you are buying, remember that a used EV's range in winter is lower than the summer figure on the display; see checking battery health.
A realistic winter plan
Treat the first cold weeks as a learning period. Note how much the displayed range falls overnight, how much a cold start costs and how far you really get on a typical trip. Use that knowledge to set your own safety margin, for example by deciding never to arrive at a destination with less than a comfortable reserve. A written note, or an entry in My Garage, helps you compare from one season to the next.
What to remember
- Winter range loss is normal and varies by car.
- Pre-condition while plugged in.
- Use seat heating, moderate speed and correct tyre pressure.
- Plan more charging stops and keep a margin.
- Do not forget the small 12-volt battery.
